Historical Churches

Pretty, old fashioned churches of colonial origin dot several parts of Sri Lanka, each one carrying a legendary tale of foreign settlers and their religious affirmations. The more popular in the highlands are the Christ Church Warleig in Dickoya (1878) the Holy Trinity Church Nuwara Eliya (1852) and St. Paul’s Church Kandy (1853) with the Wolvendaal Church erected by the Dutch in Colombo being the oldest protestant church in Sri Lanka. The other noteworthy churches in Colombo are the St. Thomas’ Church in Gintupitiya built in 1815 and St. Paul’s Milagiriya, (1853) one of the oldest Anglican Churches of Ceylon.
